What is African Shea Butter?

Well, that’s kind of a trick question since shea butter is only found in Africa. Pure, unrefined shea butter is becoming more popular in the beauty world as consumers turn away from processed, chemical-based cosmetics and seek out natural beauty products. So, what is shea butter? Shea butter, which we like to call “nature’s wonderbalm”, is an all-natural fat extracted from the African shea tree. This cream has a smooth and silky texture, similar to cocoa butter. Shea butter is rich in vitamin A, vitamin E, essential fatty acids, and provides moisture and nourishment to the skin and hair.

What is Shea Butter?

Shea butter comes from the almond-like fruit of the shea tree. Shea trees, also known as Karité trees, are native to Ghana, Mali, Burkina Faso, and other West African countries. No shea tree plantations exist, so workers harvest shea fruits from wild trees. Shea trees need to grow for 20-30 years before they can bear fruit. Therefore, in most parts of West Africa, communities forbid the destruction of shea trees because of their huge economic benefit to the region.

Ghanaians call shea butter “women’s gold” since it is such a valuable source of income for women in the community. Shea butter production employs many women in Western Africa and allows them to provide financially for themselves and their family.

How We Make Shea Butter

Our shea butter comes from our supplier, Naasakle Ltd., who works with their cooperative in Damango, Ghana using the following process:

1. First, we harvest the almond-like fruit of the shea tree.
2. Next, we boil the fruit until softened, and then extract the nut from its shell.
3. We hand-sort the nuts in a rigorous selection process. So rigorous, in fact, that up to 25% of shea nuts don’t pass muster.
4. The highest quality nuts are then cracked and roasted.
5. Next, we ground the roasted nuts into a paste and knead them with water. This process separates the oil from the solid matter.
6. We boil the shea oil twice to ensure purity. We then skim the fat and allow it to cool and thicken, resulting in shea butter!

The Eu’Genia Shea Difference

While there are many shea manufacturers, Eu’Genia Shea’s product is unique in quality and its benefit to the workers who make it.

Our Workers

We are a family-owned business with a focus on fair wages and opportunities for all of our workers. Our workers make 20% more than the Ghanaian minimum wage, and more than the market rate for shea nuts and butter. Plus, we donate 15% of our profits back to our workers in the form of an education fund. We help our workers to provide for their families and their futures.

Our Quality

We produce our shea butter using traditional extraction methods, passed down from generation to generation. These traditional extraction methods preserve shea butter’s natural healing properties. Additionally, we make our shea butter from the very best shea nuts, boil it twice for purity, and subject it to rigorous quality testing.

Refined vs. Unrefined Shea Butter

Eu’Genia Shea butter is 100% pure and unrefined, meaning that we produce it without chemicals, preservatives, or additives. Perhaps you’ve seen other distributors selling refined shea butter. “Refined” shea butter refers to shea butter that’s been processed with bleach or other chemicals to alter its natural aroma and color. Refined shea butter is never 100% pure or organic, despite how many manufacturers market themselves.

To truly experience the amazing benefits of shea butter, look for pure, unrefined shea butter! Eu’Genia Shea is definitely the real deal. Our shea butter is of the highest quality. Plus, when you purchase Eu’Genia Shea Butter, you’re helping to support West African women and their families. It’s a win-win!
